Set during the upheavals of the 1830s in southern Africa, Mhudi follows a young woman separated from her people by war, and her long journey back to love and home amid shifting alliances between African kingdoms and Boer settlers.
Sol Plaatje, a founding secretary of what became the African National Congress, wrote the first full length novel published in English by a Black South African. He builds the story from oral tradition and lived history rather than borrowed European forms, and it remains a cornerstone of African literature.
